ION Geophysical's subsidiary Sensor has launched the newest addition to its family of geophones for seismic exploration, the SM-24XL. The new geophone element exhibits enhanced durability in the field while continuing to record high-quality acoustic data, as evidenced in recent testing.

The new SM-24XL (eXtended Life) geophone is a variant of Sensor's SM-24 element, a low-distortion, rotating-coil geophone designed to provide high-fidelity data in 2D and 3D seismic exploration surveys. With bandwidth ranging from between 10 Hz to 240 Hz, the full potential of 2-ms/24-bit recording systems can be realized, Sensor states.

The XL variant maintains many of the technical specifications of the first generation of SM-24 geophones, but features a few fundamental differences. First, it incorporates a simplified design that reportedly enables longer field life and greater return on investment. In addition, a mounted damping resistor has been added that allows for quick and easy maintenance of strings and replacement of geophone elements in the field.

The height of the plastic enclosure for the elements has increased marginally to accommodate the slightly taller 24XL element, although the new enclosure can also accommodate a standard SM-24 geophone through the addition of a 2-mm thick disc in the bottom of the case.

Most importantly, the new element is much more rigorous, as evidenced by a series of side-by-side laboratory evaluations that included shaker tests and a comparative analysis conducted by TU Delft University. In addition, field trials were conducted in winter conditions in Poland by Geofizyka Torun, an international geophysical service provider specializing in onshore and transition zone seismic acquisition and a long-standing Sensor client. In all tests, the 24XL withstood harsh treatment with ease, and there was no discernible difference in terms of recording quality between the 24XL and SM-24.

Henryk Chojnowski, vice president and chief technology officer of Geofizyka Torun, said, "Our twenty-five year relationship with Sensor affords us an opportunity to be early adopters of new technology and provides an operational advantage for our crews. The new SM-24XL not only proved to be as reliable and efficient as the previous generation of Sensor geophones, but also delivered the same high quality data our clients rely upon to make strategic drilling decisions. We are thoroughly pleased with the new, simplified design, and we anticipate improved durability and product performance, along with full support in the field by the Sensor team."

The new SM-24XL geophone is manufactured in Dubai under ISO:9001 quality standards and is immediately available as a commercial product. Sensor states that it is also the only geophone available on the market that comes with a four-year warranty.
