Halliburton’s Landmark division recently launched its GeoGraphix Discovery 3D software, a new geologic interpretation software package incorporating visualization tools from Microsoft’s Xbox gaming console. This newest addition to the GeoGraphix product family promises users an immersive, game-like experience when developing geologic interpretations.

The company states that the new visualization software is one of the first oil and gas software packages to leverage the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system. This, combined with the inclusion of the gaming technology console, yields a product that improves the way geoscientists interact with and manipulate 3D subsurface models allowing for faster, more accurate interpretations and decisions.

The software uses a 64-bit multithreaded architecture to take advantage of the latest central processing unit and memory enhancements. This allows for surfaces and layers of an Earth model to be combined in a 3D scene and animated such that the relationships between all surfaces can be visualized.

The Discovery 3D package also offers both a common orbital camera control and a first-person camera for more advanced animation and motion control. The first-person camera, which is typically only found in the gaming industry, offers users the ability to navigate through and around large scenes with a high level of precision.

“Discovery 3D software is the result of the partnership combining Landmark’s geoscience expertise and Microsoft’s rich and pervasive technology platform,” said Chris Usher, senior director of Landmark Software and Services. In this technology, “Landmark is introducing an E&P visualization product that applies the latest in 3D graphics and gaming technology, giving geoscientists a seamless and productive way to interact with 3D models,” he added.

The software also promises the next generation of geoscientists, who may be familiar with gaming consoles, a familiar environment to work in, making it quick and easy for them to adopt the technology.

“Discovery 3D software is a great example and just the tip of the iceberg in a series of breakthrough innovations our companies will deliver to the oil & gas industry in the coming months and years,” said Albrecht (Ali) Ferling, managing director, Worldwide Oil and Gas Industries for Microsoft.

When Discovery 3D is combined with the integrated Discovery software platform framework, resulting workflows provide a novel interaction with all of the well information, geologic interpretations, structural and geo-referenced layers in 3D. Geologic interpretations developed using the GeoGraphix Discovery workflow, and visualized in realtime through Discovery 3D software, provide an enhanced, more complete understanding of the geologist’s work, and they ultimately improve models in a real-world, 3D Earth-model domain, Halliburton states.
