Weatherford International has launched a new concentric drilling reamer known as RipTide, promising greater efficiency in hole enlargement while drilling (HEWD) for a range of applications.

The RipTide tool provides up to a 25% larger hole beyond the bit diameter while drilling, by using its unique microwave-sintered, polycrystalline diamond cutters (PDCs). Weatherford states that this sintering process offers increased durability, hardness, and impact strength compared to more conventional PDCs?properties that reduce the wear on the cutters, minimize the risk of performance failure, and improve overall cutting efficiency.

Potentially costly precision errors are reduced through gauge trimmers on the tool, which control cutting depth during each rotation and minimize the risk of drilling an improperly sized hole, the company reports.

An additional benefit reportedly comes from the RipTide’s configuration. While conventional HEWD tools house all components in a single body, the new tool has a separate controller and reamer body, which allows the tool to be adapted to accommodate changes in the hydraulics program in a faster, more efficient manner. In addition, the cutter block has a balanced, concentric design, which minimizes vibration that could result in failure of bottomhole assembly components, lost tools, or nonproductive time.

Some of the proposed applications for the RipTide tool include:

Underreaming concentric boreholes below casing restrictions to facilitate the running of casing strings and to permit a larger intermediate casing diameter
Expanding existing pilot holes in a wide range of formations
Reducing annular fluid velocities to manage equivalent circulation density and minimize kicking risks
Facilitating openhole, gravel-pack, and oversized liner completions
Optimizing cement jobs
Back reaming
