R&M Energy Systems has improved upon its Sentry pipeline and vessel closure technology with an innovative one-piece sealing system promising improved safety and lower cost.

The Sentry line of nonthreaded, internal door closures incorporates a sealing concept that relies on a simple locking ring that slides within a groove machined into the outer flange or hub; when expanded to the closed position, the locking ring securely locks the door in position.

The closures are designed for applications ranging from high-pressure pipelines and pressure vessels to pig traps and manway accesses. The company states that they offer several features and benefits not available in other types of closures, including:

• Greater security, thanks to heavier and more rugged locking components that retain pressure in both shear and compression modes
• Greater safety, as all locking components remain fully engaged until vessel depressurization is complete
• Ease of operation, a single operator can close even the largest closure with minimal time and effort

An improved hinge arrangement and a unique means of holding the locking segments in the open position make operation of the closure smooth and easy. The innovative method of securing the closure’s locking components to the door also helps to prevent the possibility of injury during pipeline or vessel servicing, R&M Energy Systems states.

The additional benefit of the closure’s new one-piece seal lies in its speed and ease of installation, thanks to an antiextrusion spring molded directly into the seal.  The spring ensures an additional degree of secure sealing, according to the company.

The one-piece seal is available in a variety of materials, including Viton, nitrile butadiene rubber, and hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber. The seals are molded in all sizes with no vulcanized splices and are available in other compounds upon request.

As with all pressure-retaining components on the Sentry closure, the one-piece seal is manufactured from ASME SA-designated materials.
